The Relaxation Response

What is the Relaxation Response? Basically it is the opposite of the ‘Adrenaline Rush’ that we associate with stress and anxiety. Physiologically, our bodies respond to peceived threatening  situations with an increased release of the hormones Epinephrine and norepinephrine, leading to an increase in our heart rate and blood pressure, and an accelerated breathing rate preparing our bodies for the ‘Fight or Flight’ response.

At the end of each Yoga session, we do a minimum 10 minute progressive muscle relaxation exercise with visualisation to calm the mind and soothe the body after the class, leaving you refreshed and relaxed.

When your body is well balanced, it functions in harmony, your skeleton supports your body and your muscles can enjoy their work of moving your bones without stress. When your posture is out of balance, your muscles have to compensate and act as supporters, so the contract and stiffen and you end up carrying a lot of unnecessary tension. The cumulative effect on your nervous system results in fatigue which is never completely relieved by sleep and results in exhaustion.

When you begin to practise Yoga, the effect on your energy level can be dramatic. As your posture becomes more balanced, the circulation of blood improves and your breathing flows more easily. Your body then relaxes and more at ease and as a result your energy is increased.
